Intriguing

Today I am feeling a little more optimistic about my writing than I have in a while. In the last week I have gotten two requests for partials from editors, one for Kingdom of the Dead, and one for The Lion of Solkara. Now this doesn’t mean that either book is going to be published, it just means that someone read the synopsis, and in one case a few chapters, and they wanted to read more.
It is a nice feeling. Progress on my latest novel has been pretty slow, and this kind of makes up for it.
Why has progress been so slow?
Without getting into too many details, I have decided to push myself a little and try something I haven’t done before.  My latest novel is set in a world full of political intrigue. Twice now I have tied the story into such a knot I couldn’t unravel it, and had to start over.
After that, I had the idea of basing some of the intrigue in the story on actual events which happened in the Roman Empire, only to be told by an alpha reader that those parts where “unbelievable” and “could never happen in real life”
I searched the internet for some writing tips and found a few, but I am still trying to figure out exactly how to do this a) without putting in an overload of extraneous information into the story b) in a believable manner c) with enough twists and turns to make it interesting.
I just order Dynasties and Demagogues, a role playing manual.

Item Description: Rulers make history -- Dynasties and Demagogues helps you make some history of your own with an in-depth look at the hidden rules of political intrigue and power brokering. Players are challenged to unravel the schemes of duplicitous enemies and allies alike as part of their characters' own rise to power. And for GMs, Dynasties and Demagogues affords a close look at the nitty-gritty of political campaigns fraught with plots and counter-plots, assassinations, duels, and changing allegiances, all tied together in an intricate web of power relations.
I’ll let you know if it helps. I haven’t played D&D since college but I remember being the DM was pretty much just writing a story, which is why I liked doing it so much. Hopefully it is the secret ingredient that helps me “get it”.
The one saving grace that will make the novel a little easier is that most of the intrigue is going to be taking place in the background. And my main character’s arc has him moving away from his life embroiled in political intrigue. We’ll see how it goes.
If anyone has any tips, please leave them in the comments.

A New Horror Monster????

So I came across a factoid today that I didn’t know that has seriously got my brain churning with story ideas. I thought I would share the facts in case any of you were looking for a different monster for a horror story. It is probably common knowledge to some of you, but chimpanzees are omnivorous.

They eat meat. Their preferred meat is monkey. If you don’t believe me do a youtube search of “chimpanzee hunting monkey”, but be prepared. Chimps like to tear their prey up and eat it while it is still alive. Some of the videos are a little graphic.

Creepy Chimp Facts

1. Chimps go out in hunting parties to look for food.
2. A full grown chimp though only weighing in at around 120lbs is twice as strong as a 250lb man.
3. A group of chimps will invade another group’s territory and kill them for the land.
4. They are one of the few species that has been known to commit murder.
5. They eat everything they kill, including other chimps.
6. I found a few reports of chimps attacking humans. During one incident in 2009 a man was beaten by two chimps. Then they ate his foot, his face, and his genitals, but he survived.
7. Creepiest of all, chimps are almost human, with all the hate, anger, and vile things that entails. (Also with all the love, curiosity, and compassion that entails, for those of you looking for an unlikely hero)

Anyway, just thought I would share.

These facts have been gathered through liberal use of google-fu and I would recommend double checking everything before actually using it in a story.

The Procrastination Helper Part 1

I’m back. And I did not win the jackpot. I am however very tired so instead of a long winded post about writing or some odd little post where I think I am funny, I have decided to tell you all about two web series that I have been watching. I have to give credit where credit is do and say that I found out about both of these from reading Patrick Rothfuss’ blog. He is a New York Times bestseller so I figure I am in good company when I watch these instead of write. So here are a couple of tools to help all you procrastinators out there.

The first is called The Guild, here is the Wikipedia description: The show revolves around the lives of an online guild, The Knights of Good, who play countless hours of an unnamed MMORPG video game. The story focuses on Codex, the guild's Priestess, who attempts to lead a normal life after one of her guild-mates, Warlock Zaboo (Sandeep Parikh), shows up on her doorstep.

While I have never really gotten into MMORPG games my old paper and dice roll playing was enough to let me see the humor in the show. You can watch it HERE or it is also out in DVD. I even think you can get it via Netflix.

The second is called The Legend of Neil, here is the Wikipedia description: The series follows Neil, who is sucked into the world of The Legend of Zelda while playing the game. As he travels Hyrule he is mistaken for the hero of the game, Link. The series is "full of self degrading, foul humor", such as when Neil is being sucked into the game he is masturbating and strangled himself with his NES controller.

For this one I have to warn everyone that there are some pretty crude jokes and adult language/themes. But I am guessing you get that from the fact that the Wikipedia description tells you that the main character enters the Legend of Zelda through autoerotic asphyxia. There are parts that are laugh out loud funny, and other parts that make you give a nervous uncomfortable giggle, but as a former Legend of Zelda player, I really enjoyed it. (Yes I have beaten the game, unlike Neil) You can watch episodes HERE

Weird Dream

So its 5:26am. I should be in bed but I had a wierd dream that woke me right up like it was some kind of nightmare(which it wasn't). I dreamed that I was in high school weird enough since I am 30 years old. And that my dad had to move to Hyannis Nebraska to take care of grandparents.

My grandparents both passed away before I was in high school so that is strange enough. More weirdness, I have never been to Hyannis, I had no idea where it was until I just used to google maps. I barely knew it was in Nebraska. The only time I have ever even heard the name was when they give high school sports scores on the radio. It is about 114 from where I grew up, in Chadron and about 78 miles from where my granparents lived, in Hemingford. Chadron is only 45 miles from Hemingford.
So why the hell was I dreaming about moving to some place I have never been, and didn't even know where it was?

It was nice to have dream about my dad he passed away back in 2001, so it was nice to see his face but it was such a strange dream, and it woke me up like a shot. But in the dream I wasn't even upset that I had to move. In my dream some of my friends had just moved there, and I thought it was cool to move.
I believe that some dreams can be analyzed, that dreams can occasionally be prophetic, that sometimes they are just random collections of memories and thoughts all bunched together, heck I even believe that sometimes people who passed on can give you messages in dreams, but what the heck is the High School and Hyannis dream about?

Writing- Because of Natural talent or hard work

And I started to wonder if I write because of natural talent or hard work. In high school the only subjects I scored lower than a B in were english and speech, and in college I got a D+ in composition, now to be fair to myself 50% of my grade in that class was spelling tests, which as anyone who has read one of my first drafts can tell you, is my achilles heel. So D+ wasn't so bad considering I averaged 40% on my spelling tests.

Unlike the people who responded to Lydia's wonderful blog, I was never told that I was a good writer. My english teachers never tried to get me to write more. I started writing when I was 29. I had a story in my head that I wanted to read. I spent every night writing for 5 months and had a really bad novel(which I hope has gotten better with all the edits I have made to it). Then I wrote some short stories, just to have something to do during my "writing time". I sent these in to publishers without any real hope of getting them published. Two of the three short stories were published. So I wrote some more.
It has been a little over a year since then, and I have written a lot of stuff. But I never thought that I was "working hard" at becoming a writer. It was just something I enjoyed doing so I did it. Like most authors I dream of someday making a living off my writing. How cool would it be to make a living off of something I like doing so much?
Back to the question. Talent or hard work.... uhmm....neither?

I can credit my writing career to my dad. Who gave me a half hour later bed time if I was reading (an awesome deal for a night owl like me). When I didn't have any books I would make up bedtime stories in my head to put me to sleep. This habit has continued all my life.

So I have all these stories in my head, and instead of just thinking "Somebody should write that" I write them. I think I am getting better at telling the stories through writing them down, but I can't really say I work hard at writing or that I am a huge natural talent.

Writing Habits

So it is nearly 3 in the morning and I am still up with an upset stomach. I apologize if this post makes no sense, I am really tired. I am usually in bed by 12.
I was just sitting here thinking about the changes in my writing habits lately. Since Christmas I have only written one short story. I am still accomplishing my goal of writing one chapter a week in my novel, but I started to wonder why no ideas for short stories have been coming to me, and why I have only been writing one day a week. (Before Christmas I was writing everyday for about an hour after Jessy went to bed)
I have narrowed down the culprits.

1.

Earth Defense Force 2017
Jessy got me this for Christmas as an after thought, she had a little money left over and apparently the game was fairly cheap. When I got it I had not played a video game in months, now I play this game everyday. It is a first person shooter where giant bugs from outer space are invading earth. Which sounds kind of silly, but it is super fun. Especially when you lay out a line of C70 bombs and let the bugs come to you and blow it. Something about the giant explosion that levels a full city block brings out the little Lex Luthor in me and I can't help but laugh manically.

2.

Adobe illustrator. This is the program that I use to make the covers for Pill Hill Press. I have been busy using it for book covers, and promotional items. Also another small press liked our covers so much that they are paying me to design theirs! I am not making very much money but I finally have concrete proof that the graphic design classes I took while getting my Applied History degree were totally worth it.

3.

Oh the dreaded google. Vile lovely mistress that saps away my time. How can I spend two hours on you and do absolutely nothing?

4.

I caught the flu, went to bed early for a week, got over it and somehow caught it again and was sick for another week. How does that even happen?

5.

Okay, so when they advertise Netflix as being cheaper than the video store, they are totally right, but we have seen all the movies we really wanted to see. So we decided to start getting old tv shows that we never saw. Since Christmas we have seen: All the episodes of Firefly (It is awesome! I love the space cowboys!, All the episodes of Dark Angel (Not nearly as good, but Jessy like it), a season of Dexter (We liked the first season, dv-red the third and needed to watch the 2nd to get it off the DVR), and now we are watching Legend of the Seeker(It's not bad, but I can't say it is good). What's next? We're thinking Battlestar Galatica.

6.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time book series. I started reading this series when I was in high school. Nearly 3 million words later, there is a new book out. I try to read it and realize, I have no clue what is going on, so I have to reread the entire series. I am on a Knife of Dreams, once I finish it I can finally read the new book. But as I said that means that I have read nearly 3 million words since Christmas, no wonder it seems like I have no free time.
In my opinion it is totally worth it. If you like fantasy and want to read something that is truly epic (and not just in word count) try this series. Someday I want to be half the writer Robert Jordan is, it feels like I know every character in the books, and according to google there were 96 POV characters by book #8 A Path of Daggers. Knife of Dreams, the book I am currently reading is book #11.
So there it is. My List of reasons not to write. But I am finally over the flu. I am 84.3% done with Earth Defense Force, and I only have a measly 400,000 words left to read in the Wheel of Time. I should be done with those by the end of the month. Then maybe I will find more time to write.
I think lack of sleep is making me ramble. I better stop now. Goodnight.

Here are a couple of youtube videos about Firefly

Stuff

So I finished my first edit of Kingdom of the Dead. Now the whole thing actually makes sense. I just have to go through it all again and fix awkward sentences, grammar, and add descriptions. Then I will proably have to go through it again. My first, as yet unpublished, novel took 5 edits, and I still need to go through it again to fix grammar problems. So the three or four edits of KotD is actually an improvement.

I have started writing my next novel, with the working title God's War. That is going to have to change, but at least it is better than "book", "story", or "ZombieboOk" which were the working titles of my other three novels.

My Top Ten Favorite Villians

I decided I needed a break from Nano, so instead of writing a short story during my writing time I did something completely unproductive. So without further ado-

The Villain. The driving force of any good story.

Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines villain as "a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime; scoundrel; or a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot."

Below I have collected my top ten villains from film and literature.

10. Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians) – Perhaps one of the most evil characters ever created, she wanted to kill puppies for their fur. It doesn’t get any more evil. The only reason she did not make it higher on the list is complete and total incompetence.

9. Angelus (Buffy the vampire slayer) – Angelus is cruel for the sake of being cruel, and has a devious mind that always kept him one step ahead of the scoobie gang, until they gave him his soul back, damn scoobie gang.

8. Thread (Anne McCaffery’s Pern Novels) - Thread, an unintelligent organism that falls from space with only one desire, to eat all living things. I’m a sucker for the seemingly unstoppable bad guy, even when the bad guy isn’t sentient. The only thing that kills it is fire, good thing they have all those dragons on Pern or they would totally be screwed.

7. Malice Do’ Urden (RA Salvatore’s Drizzt Novels) – A powerful woman who is constantly in state of war with the other houses of Menzoberranzan, she leads her house in a ruthless struggle to become the most powerful of the noble families. How can you not like a lady who brings her son’s dead father back from the dead as a zombie, for the sole purpose of killing her son. Now that’s what I call evil.

6. Sauron (Lord of the Rings) – The great and powerful evil lord, who for all intents and purposes is a god. He wages a violent and bloody war that nearly destroys all human life in middle earth. You gotta love all powerful evil.

5. Lex Luthor (Superman) – The man with the plan and the money to get it done. The classic oil baron tycoon with a twist, how can you not love him, anyone who can take on Superman again and again and somehow always seems to get away deserves a round of applause. I mean when you get right down to it he’s just guy, and he takes on Superman. If he were up against any other hero they would be toast.

4. Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) – Jason is the ultimate unstoppable force. You can’t reason with him, you can’t negotiate, you can’t even run. No matter how fast you run or how far, he will catch you. He is one of my all time favorite villains.

3. Iago (Othello) – The ultimate schemer who all other villains are just pale imitations of. Iago plots the downfall of Othello from the shadows, never confronting him face to face, the whole while pretending to be his friend. His reason, not getting a promotion at work.

2. Lord Soth (Dragonlance Series) – The Knight of the Black Rose. One of the fabled Knights of Solamina, whose battle cry Est sularus oth mithas(my honor is my life) brought hope to many and he is a hero of Krynn. Until he falls. As a villian he is cursed with unnatural life for the crimes he committed before his death. Every night he must sit in his ruined castle and hear the story of his dark deeds, of how he was tasked with saving the world but instead he returned home to confront the woman he loved who he, falsely, believed was unfaithful. In a fit of jealous rage he kills her and the cataclysm he could have stopped kills millions. He is a powerful force for evil, who can kill with just a word. He is a villain who shows just how far a hero can fall.

1. Darth Vader (Star Wars) – Once more we see the fallen hero, who has become a powerful force for evil. He is a ruthless killer, who leads the Empires forces with an iron fist. But his story is also one of redemption, even after years of serving evil there is still a spark of goodness in him. He is without a doubt the greatest villian ever.
